MR ISIDORE KERMAN

Portrait of Mr Isidore Kerman

Oil on canvas, 38 x 29 inches, 1980

Isidore Kerman was often termed a ‘society’ lawyer, but his activities encompassed such a wide variety of interests, including the turf and restaurants, that it seemed there were few people he did not know.

My work had been recommended to him by Cyril Sweett, head of the quantity surveyors Cyril Sweett & Partners, whose portrait I had previously painted for his home in London.

I was intrigued by my new commission. Isidore Kerman was consistently charming and infuriatingly but not surprisingly silent about most of his multifarious interests, the range of which is suggested by the copy of the Financial Times that he holds in his hand. His reflective, eagle-like expression characterises this most urbane of lawyers.
