Miss Helen Campbell-Preston
Red chalk drawing, 14 x 11 inches, 1971
Daughter of Mrs Frances (later Dame Frances) Campbell-Preston, one of the ladies-in-waiting to the Queen Mother.I was commissioned to do a series of drawings as a wedding present from Mrs Campbell-Preston to her prospective son-in-law.
The drawings were in preparation for an oil portrait. Of the series, this was the drawing the family didn’t want, but paradoxically it has been ‘the face that launched a hundred commissions’. I had been introduced to Mrs Campbell-Preston by Lord Adam Gordon, Comptroller to Her Majesty The Queen Mother, as he had been much taken with my portrait of his wife.
