Lord James Russell

Brown chalk drawing, 14 x 11 inches, 1993

For this drawing, commissioned by the Marchioness of Tavistock to capture her youngest son on the eve of his majority, I sought to portray the emerging personality of the sitter. He was thoroughly engaging, with a true interest in my work, visiting my studio in Colchester for sittings.

The only son of the current Ducal family to be born in Woburn Abbey itself, he has an affinity with the great house and an impressive knowledge of its magnificent art collection. He subsequently went on to study fine art.
