Mrs Richard Lindsay
Oil on canvas, 26 x 19 inches, 2001
Richard Lindsey initially commissioned a portrait of his wife, Barbara, with a request that it must not be too formal. Country life still forms the backbone of much English life, and with her love of the countryside and a passion for horses, she seemed comfortable with the idea of being painted in her hacking jacket.
This portrait was so successful that a year later her husband returned for his companion piece portrait, to be painted in a similar country vein.
