The Rt. Hon Michael Howard, 2007

Commissioned by The Carlton Club, London. Oil on canvas 38 x 28 inches

In the end, I painted two portraits of Michael Howard; the first for The Carlton Club and the second for Portcullis House, to form part of the Parliamentary Art Collection.

The first sitting took place in the Chamber of the House of Commons and in order to give us both a bit of privacy, it took place early in the morning before the House convened. In fact, we were locked in the Chamber for the better part of an hour and one half. The history of the place was palpable and I feel that it added to Michael’s presence at the Dispatch Box. Once the portrait was finished, I received a charming note from him, “Sandra loves it – and I do even more than I did when I first saw it. Thank you so very much.”
