Sir Evelyn De Rothschild

Oil on canvas, 30 x 25 inches, 1997

Painted in Sir Evelyn’s office at N. M. Rothschild & Sons, the City merchant bank. I was looking for a particularly beautiful object to enhance the portrait, something to conjure up visions of the family collections of fine French clocks and exquisite objets d’art.

Not surprisingly, Sir Evelyn had a number of interesting and even amusing pieces about his office, and these were included in the portrait.

Lady de Rothschild felt that a plain background was too stark and made the inspired suggestion that a painting of Sir Evelyn’s father should be included. Coincidentally, this portrait happens to include several more of Sir Evelyn’s ancestors, creating an appropriate reference to his distinguished family.
