Dr and Mrs Daniel McGann
Oil on canvas, 50 x 40 inches, 1986
The mid-Atlantic friendship that I struck up on the Queen Elizabeth II with Dr and Mrs Daniel McGann subsequently resulted in a commission to paint their portrait and an invitation to have an exhibition in their home.
The exhibition had as its focal point a new portrait of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother, and was extensively covered by a full page article in the Los Angeles Times. It was the beginning of many commissions in California and across the USA. Such was the success of the show that I was invited to repeat the exhibition at the famous Huntington Library and to deliver a lecture on portrait painting.
Adele McGann, a well-known interior designer, is petite in stature and during an hilarious sitting she stood on a pile of Los Angeles telephone directories in order to balance Daniel in the composition.
