Mrs Ibiene Adoki-Epega

Oil on canvas, 30 x 25 inches, 1984

The elegant wife of Mr Ben Epega, a Nigerian businessman, introduced to me through a mutual friend, Dr Colin Kolbert, of Magdalene College, Cambridge.

The portrait was painted in their London home off the Edgware Road, with Mrs Epega sitting on one of her dining room chairs in a simple pose that displays both her own beauty and the effect of her dress.

Mrs Epega had an unaffected, friendly manner that contributed much to my pleasure as an artist in capturing her likeness.

Tragically, Mrs Epega was subsequently killed in a car accident. I hope that this portrait will always evoke happier memories of this most charming of sitters for her family and friends.
