Rt.Hon.Lord Sterling of Plaistow, GCVO,CBE
Oil on canvas, 60 x 40 inches, 2006
"Jeffrey Sterling personally chose me as the artist to paint his portrait and a meeting was arranged for us to discuss the way forward at his offices in Pall Mall"
He wanted me to see various pictures in the P&O art collection and amongst the marine art were a few remarkable portraits. Lord Sterling’s favourite was a life-size full-length work of The Rt. Hon. the Earl of Inchcape (1852-1932), by de Laszlo, a picture painted with formidable dexterity by one of the 20th century’s most successful artists. It was Lord Sterling’s hope that I would be inspired by this picture and bring some of its virtuosity to his portrait. Quite a challenge!!
