Ambassador William Crowe

Oil on canvas, 21 x 16 inches, 1997

A modest man, Ambassador Crowe wanted to break with the tradition of the grander 50 x 40 inch portraits hanging at the Embassy in favour of a more humble ‘head and shoulders’ style.

The sittings took place at Winfield House (Barbara Hutton’s former home, and now the residence of the United States Ambassador to the Court of St James’s).

This was painted in six weeks, at white heat, with the sittings taking place after breakfast.
